Stephen Spender Prize 2023 - Information for universities

 

I am writing to share information about this year’s Stephen Spender Prize for Poetry in Translation, which opens for entries on 12 May 2023.

We are contacting university education departments around the world to invite you to spread the word about the prize, which we hope could be of interest to many of your students and colleagues. The rules are simple: translate into English any poem from any language – from French to Farsi, from Spanish to Somali—and win publication and cash prizes!

For the first time, this year we are delighted to extend the Open (adult) category to entrants aged 19+ from all over the world, welcoming translations into all World Englishes.

As the original poem can be sourced from any language, the Prize is ideally suited to students of both ancient and modern languages, as well as English and Creative Writing departments. It is also an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful diversity of languages spoken beyond the classroom, by students and staff of all disciplines. Last year, we received translations from over 90 languages, and we hope to top this in 2023.

Stephen Spender Prize for Poetry in Translation 2023 | Opening for entries on Friday 12 May, deadline 14 July

Translate ANY poem from ANY language into English, and win publication and cash prizes! Students, teachers and budding poets of all ages are warmly invited to take part in the Stephen Spender Prize for poetry in translation, open to entrants aged 19+ from all over the world.

Entry guidelines:

Entrants are invited to submit an English translation of a published poem from any language, ancient or modern, together with a commentary of no more than 300 words. The translation should be max. 60 lines (extracts are accepted). All forms and genres are welcome, including texts from rap, spoken word and slam poetry. We also welcome translations from sign language.

Judges:

Taher Adel, Jennifer Wong, Samantha Schnee

Prizes:

£1000 (1st), £500 (2nd), £250 (3rd)

All winners will have their translations published in our 2023 prize booklet and will be invited to participate in our livestreamed awards ceremony in the autumn.

We will also reward three Highly Commended entrants and up to 30 Commendees, as well as awarding three special commendations for first-time entrants. 

Entry Fee: 

£10 per translated poem, or £5 per additional poem in the same submission (up to a maximum of two additional entries per submission).
